Match report
Despite a stirring late rally AFC Wimbledon Ladies lost their opening league match 2-1 at home to Southampton Saints.
The Dons dominated the early stages but fell behind in the 21st minute when Whitcombe sprung the offside trap and lobbed Louise Cooper. Whitcombe then volleyed over before extending the Saints' advantage in the 39th minute, slotting home Stenning's cross from close range.
After the interval Roberts saved well from Laura Smith before Lauren Nuttall was tripped in the area, allowing Julie Bygrave to reduce the deficit from the spot in the 50th minute. Southampton were content to defend their lead and the Dons created a host of chances. Smith missed a sitter, Keisha Ramos had a shot kicked off the line, Beth Sims had a shot turned round the post then another shot hit the post, Kelly Nethercoat miskicked in front of goal, Sims ran clean through but shot over, then a Ramos lob struck the Saints bar deep into injury time. |
