AFC WIMBLEDON LADIES 6 CRYSTAL PALACE LADIES 1
AFC Wimbledon Ladies moved off the bottom of the table with a convincing victory over Crystal Palace in a game in which nearly all the breaks went to the home side.
The visitors began strongly with Ogunneye having a shot just wide but it was the Dons who went ahead in the 15th minute when a Laura Smith through ball caught out the slow and square Palace defence allowing Beth Sims to lob the ball home. Palace should have equalised when Ogunneye rounded Louise Cooper only for Claire Gooch to make a perfect last ditch tackle. The Dons went further ahead in the 32nd minute when Cooper's long ball set up Julie Bygrave to lob the ball over Morley, and eight minutes later a clever Andy McGrady pass allowed Sims to slide the ball home for number 3. Cooper then denied Ogunneye as a corner was not cleared, but then a Cruyff turn by Sims took out her defender allowing Sims to cross for Bygrave to thump a perfect volley home. Lizzie Laws then powered a free kick over Morley in first half injury time to make it 5-0 at the break.
Palace dominated the opening stages of the second half with an Ogunneye corner coming back off the bar, but Laws forced a good save from Morley before Bygrave seized on a weak backpass in the 70th minute to win a challenge with Morley and tap the ball home. Palace finally had a stroke of luck when the referee awarded them a penalty after Cooper had won the ball cleanly. Ogunneye reduced the arrears. There was still time for Lauren Nuttall to clear a Palace shot off the line and Lisa Patey to twice cleverly put Sims clean through, only for Morley to make two fine saves. |
